2 Chick - 1 Egg... Still

6/16/2016

As of this morning (06/16/2016 0630) we still have one unhatched egg. Starting to look more and more like maybe we have one strike.

However, the good news, the chicks have shown a noticeable change in size. They seem to be thriving and growing quite rapidly. As I was watching some of the footage this morning, I noticed something quite endearing. Duke will actually feed Duchess as she sits on the chicks. I am sure that nature has a very practical purpose for this, however the slight romantic in me finds that a bit sweet.

Here are some snapshots from this morning and a clip of Duke feed Duchess.

Snappy’s osprey hatch an internet sensation

Nearly two months after Snappy Sport Senter unveiled its “osprey cam” atop a 60-foot pole outside the Evergreen sporting-goods store, a pair of newborn ospreys are helping drive international traffic to the website.
Jon Lupton, an information technology employee at the store owned by his father, said viewers from 43 countries have logged more than 60,000 views of the website’s popular “Osprey Page” in the past month.
“People just have a kind of innate interest,” Lupton said. “We see most of our traffic, over 80 percent are returning views ... The osprey-cam definitely commands much of our page viewership.”
The clutch of three eggs has so far yielded two chicks, which like their parents, will be the subject of a naming contest in the coming weeks.
The two adult birds were named Duke and Duchess after the April naming contest brought in more than 600 votes from three countries and 30 states.
“We’ll do the same thing when we know how many chicks we have,” Lupton said.
His announcement of the first hatchling on June 7 brought a spike in web traffic, Lupton said, followed by a second birth on Thursday. He had been hoping that once Duchess moved out of the way, visitors to the site could catch a glimpse of a third tiny osprey, but a viewer on Monday confirmed the egg has yet to hatch.
Osprey watchers can view the live feed at www.snappysportsenter.com. For the next six to eight weeks, Lupton said it’s expected the chicks will remain in the nest.
While there has been a substantial increase in internet traffic since the osprey cam launched, he said he wasn’t sure how much of a boost it would provide for business.
“I’m not sure there’s a real tie from osprey-cam-to-dollar necessarily, but it’s definitely some good PR, a lot of good community involvement and support, and just being able to get our name out there and have it associated with something that’s a positive for the community,” he said.

One Egg Down, Two More To Go

6/8/2016

WE HAVE A CHICK!

Picture
Duke and Duchess successfully hatched the first egg in the nest yesterday (06/07/2016).  We have two more eggs to go. However this is a milestone.

The chick emerged at 8AM (or more precisely 7:58.50 MDT). We had noticed Duchess being a bit fidgety the last couple days. This was right on schedule at 41 days since we saw the first egg. The other two eggs followed 2 days apart each. So we anticipate some more hatching action in the next 36-48 hours.

Interesting Facts:

  • Egg Incubation on this chick was 41 Days (May 28 - June 7)
  • Chick was hatched at 8:00AM (7:58.50 MDT)
  • Average chick weight is 50-60 grams (~2 oz)
  • Egg shell was discarded from the nest to avoid predatory birds (like crows or such) encroaching on the nest site
  • Duchess will tear small pieces of fish and feed her young.
    • The female birds to NOT regurgitate food, but rather feed the young directly.
  • Our remaining eggs will most likely hatch in the next 36-48 hours

Discraft Frisbee Golf / Folf

6/1/2016

Picture
In the world of Frisbee golf there are several companies that manufacture discs.
The 2 major players in the industry today are Innova and Discraft. Both companies make very high quality discs with Discraft offering 2 additional types of plastic. Innova has a complex numbering system for their discs which tells you the speed, glide, turn and fade of the disc. Discraft discs have just one number and that tells you the overall stability of the disc.

I have personally played with both companies discs and have found discs that I love from both companies. The major issue is that locally there's only one brand of disc you could purchase and that was Innova. If you wanted a Discraft disc you had to order them online and wait a few days to get them. Well that is no longer an issue now Snappy's is your home for Discraft discs.
